COVID-19 Testing Q&A

When do I need COVID-19 testing?

You should get tested if you:

  • Have symptoms of COVID illness
  • Were exposed to someone with the virus
  • Traveled to a high-risk area
  • Attended a high-risk event
  • Need to show test results for travel, work, school, or other places

Many variables affect your risk of contracting COVID-19. Whether you’re vaccinated, how close you were to an infected person, how long you were exposed, and being inside or outside all factor into your chances of getting sick.

What symptoms indicate I need COVID-19 testing?

If you have COVID-19, you may experience symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Dry cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Muscle aches
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Skin rash
  • Dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Discoloration of fingers and toes
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

Some people don’t have symptoms or they develop such a mild illness that they don’t associate their symptoms with COVID-19.

What types of COVID-19 testing are available?

Desoto Family Care Clinic offers two types of testing:

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test

PCR testing detects genetic material from the virus. If your test is positive, you’re currently infected by the virus. In some cases, PCR testing may find fragments after the infection clears. The PCR test is the gold standard for COVID-19 testing due to its accuracy.

Rapid COVID-19 test

A rapid test, also called an antigen test, detects proteins that come from the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. While a rapid test provides quick answers so you can start treatment, it’s not as accurate as the PCR test.

After you’re infected, it takes time for the antigens to show up. If you’re tested too early, you can test negative even when you have COVID-19.

How is COVID-19 testing performed?

For both tests, your provider uses a swab, a long, flexible stick with a soft tip. They insert the swab through your nose, collecting secretions from inside your nostril or the back of your throat.

The swabs go to a lab, where the samples are processed and genetic material or proteins are extracted and examined. If your results are negative, the lab didn’t find signs of the virus. Positive results mean you have the infection.

Can I get a COVID-19 vaccine?

Yes, Desoto Family Care Clinic also provides COVID-19 vaccines. You can schedule a vaccine anytime, and it’s safe to get your vaccine after you test positive.
